Here’s my step-by-step guide to finding a therapist who will make you feel truly connected to yourself.
1.) First, figure out all the logistics.
Are you planning on using insurance or private pay? Do you need someone available nights or weekends? Are you someone who would feel more comfortable meeting a professional online or in person? Knowing the answers to these questions can help you narrow down the search and make it more likely for counseling to be successful.
2.) Identify three potential counselors.
Go online, visit your insurance company’s website, or search popular sites like Psychology Today for counselors with the specifications you’re looking for. Decide on three counselors that pique your interest. A good sign is if their profiles, websites, and/or blogs speak to your unique experience. Do they help people with your specific concerns? Do they have training and/or experience in the types of things you’d like help with? You’ll have a greater chance of a successful therapy experience if you work with someone that you feel truly understands your struggle and knows how to help.
3.) Set up meetings/consultations.
Don’t be afraid to interview all three options before making a final decision. Many clinicians offer free initial consultations to help people figure out whether starting counseling with them is a good fit. This is your opportunity to get to know the counselor a bit more and decide if you feel connected to them.
4.) Pick the person you clicked with most!
You might be thinking, ”Well wait…don’t I need to weigh out factors like education, years of experience, etc. before making a decision?” Yes, sort of. They’re important things to consider (and for more info about that, click here) BUT the most important consideration is how you feel. Did you walk away thinking, “That counselor gets me!” or was the meeting a bit lukewarm? You want to shoot for the former! This usually is a telling sign that the person has the education and experience that is best suited to your unique needs.
I hope this helps you find the right therapist! If you're still feeling stuck, feel free to call me at (512) 586-7001 for a free 15-minute phone consultation.
